Learning Opportunities

At the centre of YPT’s artistic policy is a desire to have a positive and lasting impact on the emotional, social, and intellectual development of young people in order for them to grow into the unique and wonderful people they were born to be. At YPT, we also believe that the more challenging, the more hostile, the more ‘isolated within-the-crowd’ our world becomes, the more we need art to help us interpret the universe, connect with each other, and imagine a better future. If adults need this, kids need it more. We hope you’ll take advantage of the learning opportunities available at YPT.

Learning at YPT

A look at the many learning opportunities available at Young People’s Theatre.

House Programs

House programs are created for each production and available at all family/public performances. You can also view them online at the show pages of the website as we get closer to the opening of the play. In addition to cast and creative team details, our house programs contain helpful background information and feature a list of questions related to the show and the issues contained therein for lively pre- and post-show family discussion.

Post-Show Question & Answer Sessions

YPT conducts fun and informative Q&As after each performance, providing young people with an opportunity to engage with the artists onstage and learn more about the theatrical process.

Study Guides

A comprehensive Study Guide for each production is available online. The Guide is designed for teachers to use in the classroom, connecting the plays to the curriculum, but they also provide information about the content and form of the play, stimulate pre- and post-show discussion, and offer activities you and your family can enjoy. You can access the Study Guides for present productions as they become available or consult past season’s guides.

Drama School

YPT’s renowned Drama School has been a Toronto institution since 1969, providing a safe, nurturing environment for creative expression. Find out why 88% of parents indicated their child’s self-confidence had improved after attending our camps and classes.

Community Participation

Specialized & Youth-Centred Workshops

YPT offers a large selection of workshops for community groups and organizations that enable participants to discover how they can use the arts for self understanding and positive social change. Through theatre we explore issues relevant to youth such as leadership, bullying, violence, and sexual health. Have an idea for a workshop? Let us know and we can work together to create a specialized learning experience.

Pre- and Post-Show Workshops

Your group can book tickets to one of our performances at YPT and have an artist-educator conduct a workshop either prior to or after the performances (or both!) as a way to examine and reflect on the artistic experience and social themes that are addressed.

Some of the workshops we offer:

  • Mask-making
  • Improv
  • Storytelling

Series of Workshop Sessions

Bring in an artist-educator to conduct a series of workshop sessions at your school or organization. Participants will gain a deep understanding of a particular theme or arts practice by engaging in the creative work over several sessions.
