Member School Learning Projects

YPT’s Member Schools is a pilot program which strives to create a deeper relationship with the schools we serve. Through this initiative we, with a number of select schools, work toward multi-year partnerships centred around the experience of attending live, professional theatre.

2015/16 Resident Professional Educator

Roy FernandesRoy Fernandes is a principal at St. Sylvester in the TCDSB. He believes in and promotes holistic education – the philosophy that faith, academics and extra-curricular activities all contribute to creating life-long learners. Roy has a strong interest in inquiry-based learning as he believes the question is often more important than the answer. He considers himself blessed to have developed a close working partnership with YPT — because another firm belief of his is that drama opens a myriad of learning doors to students and adults alike. Roy believes that through drama we are able to engage students in a powerful, safe, and authentic way on issues that are relevant and meaningful to their daily lives. When he’s not coming up with endless questions to ask the YPT staff, he’s either out for a run, planning various educational adventures with other non-stop learners (you know who you are!) or trying to keep his two kids off their devices. Learning is a privilege that is best realized when we make it a life-long journey. Enjoy the ride!

Member School Student Researchers

We engage students in our Member Schools in inquiry-based learning through student-directed action research projects grounded in the context of professional theatre. These projects can focus on technical production, the process of how a play is made, and other elements of what goes into putting a play on stage, including sales, marketing and fundraising.

As researchers of their own experience, students can build on their critical thinking, inquiry, analysis and communication skills while at the same time developing their capacities in the arts.

In 2013/14, we worked with the Grade 4/5 class at West Glen Junior School, one of our Member Schools. These students explored media literacy by working with our Sales and Marketing team. They learned how to write a press release, create an e-flyer, design a poster and make a sales phone call. Take a look at some of the incredible marketing materials they created for our production of Minotaur.
